How to join
1st Bishopthorpe Scout Group run a Beaver colony, a Cub Pack, and a Scout Troop. The age ranges for these are:-
- Beavers - from 6 to 8 years old.
- Cubs - from 8 to 10 1/2 years old.
- Scouts - from 10 1/2 to 14 years old.
You can join the most appropriate section for your age without previously having been in Scouts, but from time to time there may be a waiting list - at time of writing (July 2008) there is a waiting list for Scouts and Beavers. Priority is given to those moving up from the section below i.e. from Beavers to Cub, and from Cubs to Scouts.
At 14, the Scout has the option of moving on to join the local Explorer Scout unit which is for the age range 14 to 18. Explorer Scout units are affiliated to the District rather than individual Scout Groups, and we typically feed into Yorvik Explorer Scout unit based in Dringhouses. A number of these Explorer Scouts subsequently come back to us as Young Leaders, helping the Scout Leaders in running the sections and providing invaluable help, whilst at the same time learning new skills and picking up valuable experience to go towards other activites such as the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
If you are interested in joining or would like to learn more about what Scouting is about, please contact the Group Scout Leader at gsl@bishopthorpescoutgroup.org.uk.
