Fundraising

1st Bishopthorpe Scout Group has a very successful track record in fundraising which continues to this day and ensures that all members of the group can take part in the widest range of activities that Scouts can offer.

The Group is funded primarily by the combination of the Scout Paper Collection and termly subscriptions from each child (currently £15 per term).  In addition, the Group is very successful in seeking additional sponsorship for ad hoc equipment purchases.  We are lucky to have received strong support from Bishopthorpe Parish Council in the purchase of the minibus and trailer for which we are very grateful, and in recent years we have also received money from the HBOS Foundation for camp equipment.  Other sources of funds and equipment in the past have included competitions which our Scouts have been very successful in winning, the most recent of which was a prize of £500 that enabled us to purchase four new tents.

The Bishopthorpe Scout Paper Collection has been running for many years and takes place on the first Saturday of every month. The parents and children in the group take a street each and collect paper from all over the village. This is then put in a large skip we hire from the recycling company. In the year 2007-2008 we raised over £5000 from the collection which is a fantastic achievement and our thanks go to all those who have helped.  

What do we use all this money for? Firstly it is used to meet the running costs of the minibus and trailer - insurance, maintenance and fuel. All fuel used by the minibus is payed for from Group funds which goes a long way in keeping down the cost of trips away that are organised by the sections. The money is also used in maintaining, insuring and replacing our camping equipment. In addition to the fuel subsidy, the Group also provides subsidies towards some of the trips organised by the sections, which again helps us keep the costs as low as possible for the children taking part. Funds are also set aside for long term plans and major capital expenditure - most recently this has been the purchase of the trailer, but other items are always on the horizon. One day no doubt, hopefully in the far future, we'll need to start thinking about a new minibus for example!
